This symposium is celebrating the career of Don Mackay, who for more than 50 years has made numerous invaluable contributions to understanding and quantifying the fate and transport of contaminants in the environment. Starting with early oil spill research to more recent efforts related to advanced chemical property prediction, his work has had, and continues to have, enormous impact on the field of environmental chemistry and engineering.?
Very much the engineer, Don Mackay is not content to make important, academically recognised contributions, but has devoted ingenuity, time and tireless effort to see his work used by professional environmental practitioners and applied in the environmental policy arena. He is driven by the belief that the astute application of scientific knowledge by academics, industry and governments will allow humanity to enjoy the many potential benefits of chemicals while minimising the potential detriment to humans and their environment.
For this symposium, we welcome contributions to the many areas of enquiry within which Don Mackay has made seminal contribution, including (i) understanding and quantifying the air-surface exchange of organic contaminants, (ii) developing and applying fugacity-based environmental fate and transport models, (iii) understanding and quantifying the accumulation of organic chemicals in organisms, and (iv) application of environmental modeling in environmental regulation and policy. Beyond this, we also appreciate receiving submission of contributions that more generally rely on the application of chemical engineering principles and approaches to solving the environmental challenges of the present, including climate change, and air and water quality.

In 2015, the United Nations adopted an ambitious development agenda which laid out 17 Global Goals the world should strive to achieve by 2030. Each one of those Goals – which include eradicating poverty in all its forms, ensuring access to clean, affordable and sustainable energy, and taking action against climate change – represents a thought-provoking engineering challenge which requires ingenuity and innovation to address.
This symposium will bring together engineers, scientists, and field practitioners working on solutions aimed at addressing those Goals. Sessions will be held on technologies and practices being developed in order to improve food and nutritional security in the Global South, ensure equitable access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene, strengthen global health, and promote collaborative engineering education between teaching institutions in the Global North and the Global South.

Developing Innovative Global Engineering Educational Opportunities?(a joint session with the Engineering Education Symposium)
Providing students with engaging and relevant global engineering experiences is a growing initiative across many institutions.? In addition, there is a growing movement for development of international collaborative programs between partners worldwide.? The international dimension creates a unique educational experience for students, but also adds additional complexity to the already challenging world of engineering education.? The goal of this session is to provide opportunities for knowledge sharing and enable the further development of global engineering experiences for students.

Global Health Engineering
Preventable diseases such as measles, malaria, diarrhea and pneumonia claim the lives of almost 11 million children each year, most of them in low- and middle- income countries (LICs). Millions more die from environmental burdens related to poor health such detrimental air quality, food safety, and inadequate shelter design. Many of those deaths can be prevented using evidence-based health technologies, and for that to happen, a concerted global effort to encourage the development and use of health technologies that can benefit the poorest people in the world is needed.
This session brings together engineers, scientists, and clinicians to discuss innovations and practices which are being investigated to improve public health in LICs. Those include emerging hardware technologies such as point-of-care devices and wearable gear for rapid diagnostics, mobile technologies such as mHealth and telehealth, novel drug and vaccine formularies, appropriate/frugal technologies for health, and improved organizational support systems for healthcare facilities such as hospitals and clinics. In addition, the session will showcase any other innovations related to the advancement of health in low-income communities, such as improved shelter design, clean cookstoves, better air quality monitors, and other emergent technologies.

Lack of access to clean water and basic sanitation is at the root of major global health challenges and significantly impact children's physical and mental development, gender equity and economic growth.?No single solution fits all contexts. Solutions can range from basic technologies, eco-sanitation, innovations for reducing water consumption, improving drinking water supply and quality, to value capture from waste and transformative technologies for re-inventing the toilet.?
